LAST WEEK

Can a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) be established remotely? As virtual visits become a normal part of human medicine, the jury is still out in veterinary medicine. But with veterinary visits on the decline, telehealth is being discussed as a potential way to improve access to care and help address workforce challenges.

A California bill that would allow the remote establishment of a VCPR advanced last week in the state senate, while the AVMA and California VMA (CVMA) expressed opposition.

“Veterinarians worry that the use of telemedicine without a previously established in-person relationship will produce more incidents of inaccurate diagnoses and ineffective treatment plans, more unnecessary prescriptions, and delays in accurate diagnoses and correct therapy,” said an AVMA article.

The Veterinary Virtual Care Association (VVCA) is among the supporters of the California bill, claiming it will improve access to care.

In Texas, however, for the third time, a federal district court upheld provisions of Texas’ veterinary practice act, which requires the in-person establishment of a VCPR.
