The cost of veterinary care has made headlines again as authorities in the United Kingdom are considering price control and transparency regulations.
Similar to the U.S., the cost of veterinary care in the U.K. has outpaced general inflation, prompting investigations by the country’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). In a report released last week, the CMA outlined proposed solutions to control veterinary care costs.
Some of the CMA’s proposed remedies include:
- Clear disclosures of practice ownership on websites and at physical practice locations
- The creation of a national price-comparison website, potentially managed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
- Prices or price ranges for key procedures listed on practice websites
- Providing prescriptions to pet owners and informing them that they have the option of buying veterinary drugs outside of the practice
- The capping or banning of prescription fees, which some practices charge clients who choose to buy medications outside of the practice
The CMA has asked for public comments to be submitted via email by May 27.
