Synchrony’s new 2025 Pet Lifetime of Care Study reinforces the reported upward trend in pet care costs.

Since the 2022 study, the cost to care for a dog for 15 years has increased by 11.65% (the 2025 range is $22,125 to $60,602, according to the study). The cost to care for a cat has increased by 19.4%, with the new range falling between $20,073 and $47,106.

For the first time, pocket pets (small mammals such as mice, guinea pigs, and hamsters) were included in the Synchrony study. The study found that the cost to care for a pocket pet, based on a 6-year lifespan, falls between $7,600 and $14,938.

The study also found that nearly 8 out of 10 pet owners underestimate lifetime pet care costs. Dog owners estimate paying $8,000, cat owners expect to pay less than $6,000, and pocket pet owners predict needing $3,000 for their pet’s care over a lifetime — all estimates coming in at less than half of the low end of the actual cost ranges.

Only 31% of pet owners say they can comfortably manage a major pet expense, while 74% of pet owners say they have faced unexpected pet care costs exceeding $250.
