July 21–27, 2024
As heartworm infection rates increase and spread to areas with historically lower prevalence, and Vetsource data consistently shows decreases in year-over-year parasiticide purchases through veterinary practices, the American Heartworm Society (AHS) is offering a new heartworm training course for veterinary team members.
Called “Heartworms Unraveled,” the series of five video-based training modules educates veterinary team members about heartworm biology, lifecycle and epidemiology, testing, prevention, and treatment. Feline heartworm disease is also covered. Importantly, each training module ends with client education tips.
According to 2024 Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) forecasts, the high risk of heartworm infection is expected to continue “along the Mississippi River, throughout the southern portions of the interior Midwest, and along the Atlantic coast north into Virginia and southern New Jersey.”
CAPC also forecasts an increased risk of heartworm infection in areas with historically lower prevalence, including southern Indiana, central and southern Illinois, southern Iowa, Kansas, lower Michigan, Ohio, New Mexico, Colorado, and the northern Great Plains.
CAPC recommends year-round use of preventive products and annual testing, and the organization encourages veterinary team members to discuss changing heartworm prevalence regularly with clients — something the AHS staff training course aims to address.
“We see clinical training that equips veterinary technicians and other staff members to confidently speak with clients about the importance of heartworm management as one of our top priorities,” said AHS President Jenni Rizzo, DVM.
