The second part of the PetSmart Charities-Gallup study was released last week, revealing gaps between veterinarians and pet owners, particularly regarding financial care discussions.
The study states cost is cited as the most prominent reason pet owners decline treatment, which aligns with pet owners indicating financial concerns as the most common reason they decline care.
However, there is a disconnect in perception between veterinarians and clients. Data reveals that 81% of veterinarians say they often or always recommend an alternative plan when care is declined due to cost, while 73% of pet owners who declined care due to financial barriers report they were not offered a financially-accessible alternative option.
This new research provides deeper insights into how access and affordability have strained veterinary care for both pet owners and veterinarians.
Dr. Robyn Jaynes, director of veterinary affairs at PetSmart Charities, stated, “Veterinarians enter this field because they care deeply about the welfare of animals. They too are impacted by the rising costs of delivering care on their businesses and their own mental wellness. We’re grateful to those who contributed to this study. Their insights and engagement are critical in evolving affordable solutions that meet the needs of pet parents and for veterinarians and their teams.”
