December 31, 2023–January 6, 2024
The new year started with a bang in California, where Assembly Bill 1399, a law that allows veterinarians to prescribe medications virtually, officially went into effect on January 1, 2024. Before January 1, veterinarians in California were legally able to conduct telehealth visits and recommend care, but they were unable to prescribe medications.
Telehealth provider Airvet claimed to be the first company to make a fully VCPR-compliant remote diagnosis and corresponding written prescription in the state. The company’s chief veterinary officer, Dr. Jeff Werber, was on call on New Year’s Eve and conducted the visit.
Proponents of AB1399 believe the new law will improve access to care in California and help pet parents in rural areas as well as those areas affected by veterinary staffing shortages.
