August 3-9, 2025
Shelter Animals Count has reported that an estimated 2.8 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters and rescue organizations during the first half of 2025 — a 4% decline compared to the first six months of 2024.
The report, which reflects data from more than 13,500 shelters and rescue organizations, shows that, while intake is down, shelters continue to face capacity challenges. Adoptions dipped 1%, with approximately 1.9 million pets finding homes from January through June 2025. Notably, adoption trends varied by animal size and age:
- Adoptions of large dogs dropped by 9%.
- Medium dog adoptions dipped 3%.
- Adoptions of small dogs climbed 6%.
- Young cat adoptions increased by 6%.
- Adult and senior cat adoptions declined by about 7% each.
- In the first half of 2025, about 290,000 animals were euthanized, a 2% reduction over the same period in 2024.
For veterinary professionals and industry partners, the shifting adoption patterns point to varying demand by pet age and size, which can inform targeted pet owner outreach and marketing efforts.
