August 16-22, 2026
July 2026 data from Pet Business Professor(opens in new tab) shows this year’s U.S. consumer price index slowed to 3.4% from last year’s 3.5%, with total pet-related price increases (aka petflation) dropping to 3.0%.
Even with this minor dip compared to previous months, total pet ownership costs remain near record highs, at 32.2% higher than pre-pandemic levels in December 2019. Veterinary care prices rose 4.7% compared to last year and are up a massive 53.4% since 2019.
These cumulative price increases are directly influencing how clients spend money on pets. While pet owners continue to prioritize essential medical care, practice visit frequency is declining. Outside the practice, clients are cutting back on items like toys and accessories, while increasingly turning to online retailers and store-brand pet food to help ease financial pressures.
