April 27-May 3, 2025

LAST WEEK

For many years, cats have been the “red-headed stepchild” of veterinary medicine, falling behind dogs in pet ownership, veterinary visits, and other key metrics. But a new, first-of-its-kind report from the CATalyst Council has revealed that cats might be the industry’s new favorite child, with feline visits growing while canine visits continue to decline.

According to the first 2025 CATalyst Feline Market Insights Report:

  • Feline year-over-year veterinary visits grew in 2023 and 2024, while overall veterinary visits declined.
  • Cats represent a growing percentage of the pet population in U.S. households.
  • Current conditions in the U.S., including the return-to-office movement and denser urban living, seem to favor cat ownership.
  • There are opportunities to address unmet needs in feline care.
  • Many companies are prioritizing investments in the feline care and retail spaces.

The CATalyst Feline Market Insights Report will be released quarterly. Each report will be available in its entirety to CATalyst Council sponsors, but the Council will release key takeaways to the public.
