LAST WEEK

New York lawmakers are considering a bill that could offer financial relief to pet owners. The proposal would provide a tax credit for up to two dogs or cats, covering up to $150 in basic expenses and $300 in veterinary care annually per pet, capped at $900 total.

Animals used for purposes such as research, breeding for profit, or detection are excluded from the credit. Taxpayers will also need to provide proof of pet ownership and documentation of expenses in order to be eligible. The bill is currently under review and, if passed, it will apply to the 2026 tax year.
