Veterinary Industry Summary: October 12-18, 2025
Stats from the Veterinary Industry Tracker powered by Vetsource and AVMA
October 12-18, 2025
Newly released data from the AVMA has revealed that, while pet ownership remains strong, the economic landscape for veterinary care is shifting, and veterinary practices must adapt.
According to the 2025 AVMA Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, veterinary services account for 32.4% of total household pet-related expenditures. Other key findings include:
- 83.4% of pet owners said they had a regular veterinarian or veterinary practice, but only 69.4% said they had visited a veterinary practice in 2024.
- 16.1% of dog owners and 28.0% of cat owners said they did not spend any money on veterinary care in the past year.
- Of those, 35.1% of dog owners and 38.6% of cat owners said the main reason was that their pet did not get sick or injured.
- The second most-cited (19.4%) reason dog owners didn’t go to the vet was that their dog didn’t need vaccines, while 16.4% of cat owners who didn’t go to the vet said that the cost of veterinary care was too high.
As cost sensitivity grows among some pet-owner segments, practices should revisit how they communicate the value of preventative care. Tailoring service and pricing tiers, offering flexible payment or wellness plan options, and proactively reaching newer or younger pet owners may help practices stay aligned with evolving owner economics and bridge gaps in preventative care.
