Newly released data from the AVMA has revealed that, while pet ownership remains strong, the economic landscape for veterinary care is shifting, and veterinary practices must adapt.

According to the 2025 AVMA Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook [1], veterinary services account for 32.4% of total household pet-related expenditures. Other key findings include:

As cost sensitivity grows among some pet-owner segments, practices should revisit how they communicate the value of preventative care. Tailoring service and pricing tiers, offering flexible payment or wellness plan options, and proactively reaching newer or younger pet owners may help practices stay aligned with evolving owner economics and bridge gaps in preventative care.

Veterinary industry year-over-year revenue was 1.4% last week, a drop from the previous week’s 4.0%. Year-over-year visits also declined, falling from -1.1% the week prior to -3.1% last week.

Parasiticide purchases were down again last week. Year-over-year, heartworm was -7.3%, and flea/tick was -3.4%, changes from the previous week’s respective -4.6% and -1.3%. While year-over-year service revenue was 2.4%, it fell from 5.3% the week prior, and product revenue dropped from 0.1% to -1.8%.

Last week, Maine and Connecticut once again experienced the highest year-over-year revenue growth at 6.8% and 6.4% respectively. Oregon was the only state to see growth in year-over-year visits at 0.2%, while Minnesota came in second place at -1.3%.
