While the 2025 Dog & Cat Report from the American Pet Products Association [1] revealed changes in the human-animal bond, including more cat birthday parties, dogs traveling by plane, and premium pet food purchases, the cost of veterinary care remains a concern.
A recent CivicScience pet owner survey [2] found that 32% of respondents reported a time in the past six months when they were unable to take their pet to the vet because of the cost.
The data found that, when it comes to pet spending, consumers are influenced by:
- Cost (50%)
- Healthy choice (49%)
- Safety (37%)
- Veterinary recommendation (35%)
- Convenience (29%)
- Friend or family recommendation (27%)
- Pet store displays or assistance (12%)
- Advertising or media recommendation (11%)
Although pet owners are concerned about costs, they are still willing to spend on certain pet care items. A University of Arkansas study [3] published in the Journal of Agricultural and Applied Economics found that pet owners are willing to pay for premium pet foods associated with allergy relief and sensitive digestion, while fewer pet owners are purchasing foods associated with immune support and dental breath care.
