Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) has filed a lawsuit [1] against the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) over alleged anti-competitive veterinary school accreditation practices. The outcome of this case could lead to significant changes in the regulations surrounding veterinary education and have a ripple effect on aspiring veterinarians and the cost of veterinary care.
In the suit, LMU claims that the AVMA and its accrediting arm, the Council on Education, suppress competition, restrict the number of veterinarian graduates, and limit market supply, financially benefiting AVMA members while increasing veterinary care costs.
LMU is asking for injunctive relief to halt the AVMA’s accreditation approach and for the separation of the AVMA from the Council on Education due to a conflict of interest.
