LAST WEEK

Colorado State University is now accepting applications for its new Master of Science in veterinary clinical care program [1], the first of its kind to train students to be veterinary professional associates, a new mid-level role established by the State of Colorado. CSU claims the VPA role will help alleviate veterinarian shortages and help expand access to care.

The American Veterinary Medical Association, all 50 state veterinary medical associations, and various other groups are opposed to the midlevel practitioner role [2] (MLP). The AVMA argues that the MLP poses a threat to animal health and welfare, and more efficient solutions to the workforce shortage are available.
