LAST WEEK

As of yesterday, September 30, 2025, veterinarians in Ohio have gained new telehealth powers under recently enacted legislation. Under the new Ohio law:

  • Licensed veterinarians may conduct consultations via telehealth, provided they secure informed client consent, maintain documentation, and comply with standards equivalent to in-person visits.
  • A veterinary-client-patient relationship (VCPR) may be established via real-time telehealth in many cases, enabling remote care and prescribing.
  • For non-livestock animals, veterinarians may issue an initial prescription (up to 14 days) and a single refill (another 14 days) via telehealth. Beyond that, an in-person exam is required.
  • Controlled substances may not be prescribed without an in-person physical exam.
  • For livestock raised for human consumption, a VCPR must first be established through an in-person visit, and telemedicine visits may follow. Tele-advice (non-diagnostic) may be provided prior to the establishment of the in-person VCPR.

Proponents of the new law argue that the change improves access to care, especially in underserved or rural areas. Critics caution that veterinarians could miss subtle clinical signs during virtual exams.

The Ohio Veterinary Medical Association has published guidance and a compliance checklist to help practices adapt to the new rules.
